Place to visit

1. Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple, Tiruchanoor

Tiruchanoor, also known as Alamelumangapuram is about 5 Km from Tirupathi. The temple of Sri Padmavathi Devi, the consort of Lord Sri Venkateswara is situated here. It is said that a visit to Tirumala is fruitful only after visiting the Sri Padmavathi Devi Temple

2. Silathoranam

A natural arch formation in rock, is a distinctive geological wonder just one Km north of the Tirumala Temple near the Chakra Teertham. The arch resembles the hood of a serpent, a conch (Shank) and a discus (Chakra) all symbols of worship and considered to be the source of the idol of Lord Balaji at the Tirumala temple.

3. Chandragiri

Krishnadeva Raya of Vijayanagara empire was brought up at Chandragiri Fort, built in the 11th century, before his coronation at Penukonda. It is the former capital of Vijayanagara Empire, located about 12 kms from Tirupati. The fort and mahals here are attractive tourist spots. Chandragiri – denoting the hill of the moon is traditionally associated with Chandra the Moon God who performed penance at this place to please Lord Shiva. It has many religious structures like temples of Raja Rajeswari, Venugopala, Karttikeya, Siva and Hanuman at the entrance of the fort as a guardian deity; ponds, tanks, sculptured mandapas besides a well-built fortification at the summit.

4. Kapila Theertham

While all the temples in the holy town of Tirupati are dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, this holy place is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It has an ancient Kapileswara Swamy Temple with the only holy waterfall in Tirupati situated right in the middle of the temple. A small Lord Venkateswara idol was established here in the 4th cave above the waterfall. An excellent place to visit during the monsoons. According to Puranas, Kapilamuni of ‘Paatala’ (under-world) originally worshipped the Linga at the Theertham. Lord Shiva is said to have blessed Sage Kapila with a vision of himself and consort. But for some cause the Kapila Lingam pierced up through the earth to its surface. ‘Suras’ (Devatas) started worshipping it. Even before the Linga forced itself up, the ‘Kamadhenu’ (celestial cow) made her way through a hole in the earth and took form here.

5. Sri Kalahasti

This ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is one of the panchabootha sthalams (temples celebrating Lord Shiva as the embodiment of the primary elements), air being the element in case here, the other temples being Tiruvannamalai (fire), Chidambaram (space), Thiruvanikkaval (water) and Kanchipuram (earth) respectively. The unique Shiva Linga here is located in picturesque surroundings with the Dakshina Kailasa mountain at the back and north flowing Swarnamukhi river in the front. Sri Kalahasti derives its name from a) Sri : Spider b) Kala: Serpent and c) Hasti : Elephant. This place continues to draw thousands of devotees seeking fulfillment of their desires.

6. Kanipakam

The village of Kanipakam is situated on the banks of the Bahuda River in Chittoor District. The village is famous for the Lord Ganesha temple also known as the Kanipakam Vinayaka temple built in the early part of the 11th Century by King Kulothunga Chola I and was expanded subsequently by the kings of the Vijayanagar Dynasty. Local legend claims that the temple was constructed after a sel-manifested idol of Lord Vinayaka made an appearance in a well. Even today, the idol is housed in the well, the holy water overflows during the rainy season and the idol is growing bigger continuously.

7. Other places of interest:

a. Horsely Hills: scenic hill station about 144 Kms from Tirupathi b. Swami Pushkarini: a lake located within the temple at Tirupathi c. Akasa Ganga: A beautiful waterfall on the Tirumala Hills
